Stroke recovery care at home in Leeds

Recovery from a stroke carries on long after someone leaves hospital. The repetition of everyday tasks - standing, walking, talking, using the affected hand - is a big part of how people improve.

A live-in carer turns the rehabilitation plan into everyday life, encouraging practice little and often and keeping the person safe while they regain confidence.

Could stroke recovery help?

It's often a good fit when:

  • Someone is coming home after a stroke and can't yet manage alone
  • Weakness on one side makes walking or washing unsafe
  • Speech or swallowing has been affected
  • The family want them home rather than in a care home for rehab

What your carer helps with

  • Practising the exercises the physio and OT have set
  • Safe transfers and walking with equipment
  • Speech practice and patient conversation
  • Meals prepared to the texture recommended by the speech therapist
  • Personal care while independence returns
  • Rebuilding confidence to go out again

What a day can look like

  1. Morning

Help with washing and dressing, encouraging use of the weaker side.

  2. Late morning

Exercise session from the rehab plan, then a rest.

  3. Afternoon

A short walk, speech practice or a therapy visit.

  4. Evening

Gentle stretches, tea, and help getting ready for bed.

Every day is planned around the person - this is only an example.

After a stroke in Leeds

Most people in Leeds are treated for an acute stroke at the Leeds General Infirmary, then continue rehabilitation with NHS therapists after discharge, often at home. Your carer can join therapy sessions and learn exactly what to practise between visits.

Encouraging, not taking over

Good stroke care means letting someone do as much as they can, even when it's quicker to do it for them. Our carers understand that, and they celebrate small steps forward with you.

Questions about stroke recovery

It varies. Some people need live-in support for a few months while they regain independence; others need longer-term help. We review progress regularly.

Often, yes. If we know the expected discharge date, we can have a carer ready to meet them at home.
