Questions to ask before choosing live-in care

About the carers

  • How are carers vetted? Are references and DBS checks carried out?
  • What experience do they have with conditions like dementia or Parkinson's?
  • Can we meet or speak to a carer before they start?
  • What happens if the match isn't right?

About the arrangement

Live-in care is offered in different ways. Some companies employ carers directly; others, like us, are introductory agencies that find and introduce carers. Ask which model a provider uses and what that means for who is responsible for what - it should be set out clearly in writing.

  • Who arranges cover for breaks and holidays?
  • Who do we call if there's a problem, day or night?
  • When will the care plan be looked at again, and by whom?

About cost

  • What's the weekly cost, and what does it include?
  • Are there extra charges for bank holidays, couples or higher needs?
  • What notice is needed to change or end the arrangement?

This guide is general information, not financial or legal advice. Funding rules and benefit rates usually change each April.
